Local elections have direct impact on our lives

An editorial article printed in the Rockford Register Star opinion page on March 17, 2023 by Goldie Pekarsky.

Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy.

The Jewish Federation of Rockford, a partner of the nonpartisan coalition Go Vote 815, supports using our vote to elect those who reflect our values to represent us and to weigh in on ballot measures.

By voting, we have a voice in how our government is run and how it impacts our lives.

The Consolidated Elections will be held on April 4, 2023. Voters will be asked to select their choices for school board members, various city, township, and county officials, as well as trustees for Rock Valley College.

More than any other election, local elections have a direct impact on our lives.

School board members and college trustees that can responsibly lead our educational institutions forward helps to strengthen our community to the benefit of all.

Education is the bedrock of our community and an economic engine that provides and attracts an educatedworkforce and a strong business environment. Local government manages many different things.

Elected officials spend money to influence and decide what a community’s priorities are and how it will be run. These decisions directly affect the lives of residents.

VOTE 815 and its partner organizations will hold candidate meet and greets, giving you the chance to ask questions of those running for school board and trustee.

The Harlem School District School Board meet and greet will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 22 at Windsor School, 935 Windsor Road, Loves Park.

The Rockton village officials and Hononegah District School Board meet and greet will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 22 at the Rockton Community Center, 302 W. Main St., Rockton.

Be proactive by checking your voting status at IllinoisVoterGuide.org. This nonpartisan guide is one stop shopping on candidate and voting information. Remember. Your Vote. Your Voice. Our Future.

Goldie Pekarsky is the executive director of the Jewish Federation of Rockford.

Are YOU Vote-Ready?

A coalition of community members from Galena to Joliet, Illinois is invited to join forces to insure every single citizen of voting age is registered to vote. Since a massive overhaul of the state voting laws in 2017 Illinois citizens are auto-registered to vote. Many do not realize this. Our task is to drive potential voters to a website that is a virtual compendium of knowledge for Illinois voters, the Illinois Voter Guide, created by the League of Women Voters of Illinois.

Follow the QR Code for your latest voting info!

This QR Code is the ticket to the Illinois Voter Guide. It will be everywhere, distributed by our coalition members.
